Batman has appeared on many video game consoles over the years, but few video game adaptations have translated the dark and gothic nature of the Tim Burton films as well as Sunsoft's Batman: The Video Game on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. The game was originally released for the Mega Drive in Japan, and later in North America in 1991 and Europe in 1992 by the publisher SEGA. based on the classic 1989 film, this action-platformer was a unique, better experience than its NES equivalent.
Beyond their shared name and source material, the Genesis/Mega Drive game was a more visually distinctive and mechanically robust adventure. With Sunsoft’s exclusivity contract with Nintendo of America run out in 1991, Batman was free to wing its way onto SEGA’s 16-bit powerhouse.
Gameplay: Leaps and Bounds Above the Norm
Batman: The Video Game was classic side-scrolling platforming at its core. Players control the caped crusader as he fights through dangerous locales overrun with thugs, traps and familiar faces from the film throughout. Unlike its NES incarnation, however, this Batman doesn't stick to walls. Instead,
he has a key double jump ability, a nod to SEGA’s own Shinobi series, that enables greater aerial maneuvering and precision platforming. His iconic gadgets further add to Batman’s arsenal. The Batarang, a projectile weapon, becomes a great tool for taking out enemies from afar, and the Batrope acts as a necessary means for climbing walls and accessing different platforms. How you use these tools strategically will determine how well you can survive the challenges that Gotham tosses your way.
A Tour of Gotham’s Dark Underbelly
The game offers a variety of levels, each with its own feel that evokes the movie and its own hurdles:
Gotham City Street: The introductory stage drops you into the chaotic streets of Gotham, and establishes the mission ahead.
Batman fights his way through numerous henchmen on a rainy night in
Gotham, and fight against a thief with boxing gloves.
Batman makes his way through the museum to rescue Vicki Vale, fighting the Joker's henchmen and a henchman with a sword and later fights the large, boombox-wielding henchman, Lawrence.
Gotham City Street: Back to the Gotham gutters, but this time with an ominous threat that hangs as the Joker closes his reins around the city.
In The Sky Over Gotham City: Gliding through and over the city skyline, fighting minions in-air and getting a new perspective.
Also know as "The Batwing Stage" Batman, piloting the Batwing, must shoot the Joker's helicopters and the parade balloons, inflated with Smilex gas, to save Gotham City and destroying the Joker's most powerful helicopter.
Gotham Cathedral: The concluding battle unfolds in gothic-kissed splendor of Gotham Cathedral, a clash with the Joker himself.
Inside the city's colossal cathedral, Batman has to go to the first area fighting Joker's henchmen and having a Boss-Rush. The second area Batman has to climb the Bell Tower to get to the belfry and have the final confrontation with the Joker.
